Tier System (in SSC and other exams) — Meaning, Definition & Examples (Sarkari Exam 2026)
Category: Selection
Short definition: Multi-stage selection format used by SSC and similar boards where candidates progress through sequential exam tiers — typically Tier-1 (objective screening), Tier-2 (objective + descriptive), Tier-3 (skill test), Tier-4 (document verification).
What is Tier System (in SSC and other exams)? (Detailed Explanation)
The tier system is the backbone of SSC recruitment. SSC CGL has 2 tiers since 2022 (previously 4); SSC CHSL has 2 tiers; SSC GD has 1 tier + PET/PST + medical. Each tier filters candidates progressively — only candidates clearing one tier appear for the next, and only the final-tier qualifiers are considered for posting against vacancies.
Tier-1 is always a computer-based objective test, designed as a screening filter. The cut-off here decides who appears for Tier-2 (typically 10–15× the vacancy count). Tier-2, the main exam, carries the highest weightage in final merit and is also computer-based but combines objective MCQs across multiple sections (Reasoning, English, Maths, GK, plus post-specific papers).
Final merit is calculated using only Tier-2 marks (Tier-1 is qualifying-only since 2022 SSC CGL revision). Tier-3 (descriptive paper, where applicable for posts like Inspector, AAO) and Tier-4 (DEST/CPT skill test) are qualifying-only. Document verification is mandatory before appointment but does not affect rank.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tier System (in SSC and other exams)
Q1. Has SSC CGL Tier-3 (descriptive) been removed?
Yes, since the 2022 notification SSC CGL has only Tier-1 (qualifying) and Tier-2 (merit-deciding objective). Tier-3 (DEST/CPT) is post-specific skill test, not a separate exam.
Q2. Is the same tier system used by UPSC?
No. UPSC CSE uses 'Stages' — Prelims (screening), Mains (descriptive), Interview/Personality Test. The principle is similar but UPSC's terminology differs.
Q3. Do all SSC posts have a skill test?
Only specific posts: DEST (Data Entry Speed Test) for DEO posts, Computer Proficiency Test for ASO/CSS, Stenography Test for Stenographer posts. Most other posts skip the skill stage.
