Skill Test (DEST/CPT/Stenography) — Meaning, Definition & Examples (Sarkari Exam 2026)
Category: Selection
Short definition: Qualifying-only practical tests in Data Entry Speed (DEST), Computer Proficiency (CPT), or Stenography that candidates for specific Sarkari posts must clear after the written exam — testing typing/computer/shorthand skills.
What is Skill Test (DEST/CPT/Stenography)? (Detailed Explanation)
Skill tests are post-specific. They apply only to candidates who have selected (and made it through merit on) certain posts. SSC CGL: DEST (Data Entry Speed Test, 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes) for Tax Assistant; CPT (Computer Proficiency Test — Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for ASO/CSS posts. SSC CHSL: DEST for DEO posts (8000 key depressions per hour). SSC Stenographer: shorthand at 80/100 wpm with transcription test.
Banking exams (IBPS PO, SBI PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk) do NOT have skill tests post-2018 — typing was removed from selection process. RRB ALP has Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) which is psychometric, not a skill test in the conventional sense. State-level clerical recruitments may still have typing test (Telugu/Tamil/Marathi typing for state-language clerical posts).
Skill test is qualifying — pass/fail only. Time taken or extra speed beyond the minimum threshold gives no merit advantage. Failing the skill test means disqualification despite clearing all written stages. Candidates are typically given two chances (one at the regional centre, one re-test if procedural issue arose).

Frequently Asked Questions about Skill Test (DEST/CPT/Stenography)
Q1. Is skill test the same as a typing test?
DEST is essentially a typing test (data entry speed). CPT goes beyond — testing knowledge of MS Office, file management, internet use. Stenography test requires shorthand-to-typed-text transcription.
Q2. Can I practice typing on my own keyboard layout?
Skill tests are conducted on standard QWERTY computers provided by SSC. You must be comfortable with QWERTY. Most candidates practice 1–2 months before the test using free online typing tutors.
Q3. What is the qualifying speed for DEST?
SSC CHSL DEO: 8000 key depressions per hour (≈ 35 wpm). SSC CGL Tax Assistant: 2000 in 15 min (≈ 30 wpm). PwBD candidates get extra time and/or reduced thresholds.
