Merit List — Meaning, Definition & Examples (Sarkari Exam 2026)
Category: Selection
Short definition: The final ranked list of candidates published by a recruitment board in descending order of total marks, used to fill vacancies in order of rank, category, and post preference.
What is Merit List? (Detailed Explanation)
Merit List is the culminating output of any Sarkari recruitment exam. It contains candidate roll numbers (or names) sorted by their final composite score — the sum of marks across all merit-deciding stages. Cut-offs are applied category-wise, and reserved-category candidates qualifying within the General cut-off are migrated to General against unreserved vacancies.
Most boards publish three lists: (1) Provisional Merit List (immediately after the result), (2) Final Merit List (after objections and recounting are settled), (3) Reserve List or Wait List (1.5×–2× of remaining vacancies, used to fill posts left vacant due to no-shows or rejections). The reserve list is operated for 6–12 months from the main result date.
Tie-breaking rules vary by board. Common tie-breakers (in order): (i) marks in a specific high-weightage section (e.g., Quantitative Aptitude in SSC), (ii) age (older candidate ranked higher), (iii) alphabetical order of name. UPSC uses (i) total mains marks, (ii) interview marks, (iii) age. SSC uses (i) Tier-2 marks, (ii) age.

Frequently Asked Questions about Merit List
Q1. Is the merit list category-wise or unified?
Both. Boards publish a unified merit list (all candidates by rank) plus separate category-wise lists (General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST, PwBD). Reserved candidates qualifying within General cut-off are counted against General quota.
Q2. Can my rank change after the result?
Yes — answer-key objections can cause re-evaluation, mass-cancellation of questions, or recomputation of normalised marks. A revised result with updated ranks is published. UPSC/SSC declare 'final' result only after all such revisions.
Q3. How long is the wait list active?
6 to 12 months for most central boards. After expiry, leftover vacancies are carried forward to the next year's notification.
