Ex-Servicemen Reservation — Meaning, Definition & Examples (Sarkari Exam 2026)
Category: Reservation
Short definition: 10% horizontal reservation in Group C and 20% in Group D direct-recruitment Sarkari jobs reserved for Ex-Servicemen, along with relaxations in age limit, application fee, and physical standards.
What is Ex-Servicemen Reservation? (Detailed Explanation)
Ex-Servicemen (ESM) — those who have served in the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, or paramilitary and have been discharged otherwise than by dismissal — are entitled to: 10% reservation in Group C, 20% reservation in Group D direct recruitments, age relaxation (3 years above the maximum age limit + period of military service), and exemption from application fee in most central exams.
ESM Quota is horizontal — it cuts across vertical categories (SC, ST, OBC, EWS, General). A SC Ex-Serviceman occupies an ESM seat from within the SC vertical pool, not in addition to it. There is also a Dependents of Ex-Servicemen (DESM) and War-Widows quota in some states and PSUs (typically 5%–10%).
Qualifying conditions: minimum 6 months commissioned service, or 5 years (officers) in non-pensionable service, or pensionable service in any rank. Discharge certificate from the parent service headquarters is mandatory. The candidate must produce the certificate at DV — failure results in cancellation of the ESM benefit (but not the candidature, if otherwise selected on general merit).

Frequently Asked Questions about Ex-Servicemen Reservation
Q1. Are Agniveers entitled to ESM quota after their 4-year service?
Yes — the Government has confirmed that Agniveers, after their 4-year service tenure, will be classified as Ex-Servicemen with all attendant benefits including reservation, age relaxation, and pension benefits where applicable.
Q2. Can I claim ESM quota if I served in a State Police?
No. ESM is for Defence services (Army/Navy/Air Force) and Coast Guard. Service in CAPFs (BSF, CRPF, ITBP), state police, or railway protection is NOT counted as Ex-Servicemen service for reservation purposes.

Yes, in some Group B posts. Group A officer-level posts (UPSC CSE) generally do not have ESM quota, but allow age relaxation and other concessions for ESM candidates.
