Document Verification (DV) — Meaning, Definition & Examples (Sarkari Exam 2026)
Category: Selection
Short definition: The final stage of Sarkari recruitment where shortlisted candidates appear with their original certificates and self-attested copies for verification by the recruiting authority before formal appointment.
What is Document Verification (DV)? (Detailed Explanation)
Document Verification (DV) is held after the final merit list is published. Candidates are called in order of merit, in batches typically 1.5×–2× of remaining vacancies (to allow for no-shows and rejections). DV is held at the regional offices of the recruiting board (e.g., SSC regional offices, IBPS centres, UPSC New Delhi).
Documents required at DV include: original Matriculation certificate (proof of date of birth), original 12th and Graduation certificates, original Caste/EWS/PwBD certificate, Date of Birth proof, character certificate, recent passport-size photographs, signed self-declaration forms, and discharge certificate (for ex-servicemen). Each original is verified against the self-attested copy submitted earlier.
If any document is missing, defective (e.g., wrong format caste certificate), or contradicts the application data, candidature is cancelled at DV. Candidates may be given a 7–15 day window to produce missing documents before final cancellation. The medical examination follows DV for posts requiring physical fitness (police, defence, paramilitary).

Frequently Asked Questions about Document Verification (DV)
Q1. What if I miss DV?
Most boards permit one rescheduling on medical/documented grounds. Missing without intimation results in candidature cancellation. The next merit-list candidate is called in your place.
Q2. Is DV the appointment letter?
No. DV clears you for appointment, but the formal appointment letter (offer of appointment) is issued later by the appointing authority (department/ministry). For SSC posts, this can take 6–12 months after DV.
Q3. Can I be rejected at DV even after clearing the exam?
Yes. Common rejection grounds: invalid caste certificate, wrong DOB, missing documents, suppression of facts (e.g., ongoing FIR not declared), or failing the medical fitness test.
